Shopify was founded in 2004 by several people, including Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. After trying to create and open an online store Snowdevil, that sold snowboarding equipment.
Dissatisfied with e-commerce products on the market, Lütke, a programmer by trade, instead created his own.
Lütke used an open-source Ruby on Rails-based web application development environment to create Snowdevil online store and launched it after two months of development.
The Snowdevil founders launched a platform called Shopify in June 2006.
In June 2009, Shopify launched the API and App Store platform. The API allows developers to build apps for Shopify online stores and then sell them on the Shopify app store.
In April 2010, Shopify launched a free mobile app on the Apple App Store. The app allows Shopify store owners to view and manage their stores from iOS mobile devices.
In February 2012, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc. – a software developer for mobile devices, together with 20 engineers and designers of mobile devices of the company.
In August 2013, Shopify acquired Jet Cooper, a 25-person design studio based in Toronto.
In August 2013, Shopify announced the Shopify Payments launch, which allowed merchants to accept credit cards without requiring a third-party payment gateway. The company also announced the launch of an iPad-based sales system. He uses his iPad to accept payments from debit and credit cards.
By 2014, the platform had approximately 120,000 online stores and was ranked # 3 in Deloitte’s Fast50 in Canada and # 7 in Deloitte’s Fast 500 in North America.
In September 2015, Amazon.com announced that it was shutting down Amazon Webstore for merchants and selected Shopify as its preferred migration provider; Shopify’s stock jumped more than 20% after the news.
In January 2017, Shopify announced an integration with Amazon to allow merchants to sell on Amazon from their Shopify stores. Shopify’s stock is up nearly 10% since this announcement.
In April 2017, Shopify introduced a Bluetooth-enabled debit and credit card reader for retail purchases.
In April 2018, Shopify announced a partnership with Deliv to offer same-day shipping capabilities for Shopify stores.
Online cannabis sales in Ontario were using Shopify software when the drug was legalized in October 2018. Shopify’s software will also be used to sell cannabis in person in Ontario when it was legalized in 2019.
